My Glorious play music in a crowded space, I can’t even guess the number of bands I receive details from who play this style of indie rock and the vast majority sound like a poor copy of U2, if that isn’t an oxymoron in itself. So it was with a rapidly beating heart, not in a good way, that I listened to the tracks that Astrid (PR) had pointed me towards, but my fears were dispelled immediately. What makes for a good sounding band? If there was a formula I guess everyone would sound the same, but one essential ingredient has to be passion, mixed with creativity and this comes in shovel loads from My Glorious, who are able to take a three piece outfit and create an output which at one has large venue chords, with a sense of intimacy, that would work in confined space. I mentioned on the review of their recent album Home is Where The Heart Breaks, that the music can sustain maximum volume, but also benefits, due to its depth to a quieter setting. Their reflection on everyday life makes the music accessible and the way that they develop songs so that the lyric and musical framework make a sense as a whole, to me, marks them out in this genre. “Home Is Where The Heart Breaks” ist eines dieser Alben, die man auf Anhieb in sein Herz schließt, aber trotzdem nur sehr schwer in Worten das wiedergeben kann, was auf ihnen geschieht. Die Variabilität, mit der My Glorious zu Werke gehen, verblüfft, denn hier gleicht absolut kein Song dem anderen. Bei jedem Stück denkt man: “Verdammt, das klingt ja schon wieder völlig anders!”. Doch der rote Faden ist nie verloren, was letztendlich für eine extrem ausgeprägte eigene Note spricht. Sicherlich lassen sich in diesen zwischen fetten, kantigen Soundwänden und fragiler Schönheit alternierenden Klangkaleidoskopen Parallelen zu ruppigeren Oasis oder Blur, zu zuckerwattefreien Mew, zu Coldplay mit Eiern, zu Boolflight und einigen anderen bekannten Künstlern feststellen, doch primär schimmert grundsätzlich eine Band besonders stark durch: My Glorious themselves. Ihren Sound würzen die drei mit mal postrockigen, mal progessiven und auch gerne mal noisigen Messerspitzen, doch auch Singer-/Songwriter-Querverweise, Pop und klassischer Rock mit 70er-Flair gehört zum Repertoire der Wiener. Erstaunlich ist die Energie, die in jedem der zwölf Songs steckt, und auch wenn die Musik der Gruppe oftmals ganz schön unbequem scheppern kann, dominiert eine unglaubliche Melodiosität. Konventionelle Melodien darf man allerdings kaum erwarten, ja im Grunde nicht ein mal konventionelle Songstrukturen. Nichts ist vorhersehbar, stets schüttelt man überrascht und begeistert den Kopf. “FAZIT: Hammer. Kaufen. Punkt.”
Songschreiber Samuel Fischer weiß aber nicht nur durch die Bank sauspannende Stücke zu komponieren, nein, der Gitarrist ist auch noch mit einer äußerst charismatischen, ausdrucksstarken, abwechslungsreichen und vereinnahmenden Stimme gesegnet, so dass auch der letzte eventuelle Makel ausgeschlossen ist. Coming off their self-produced EP, Leper, My Glorious seem to have a lot more to say on this one. The CD starts up with a song titled “Love Extenders” where you hear Fischer say “Music always got something to say”. You can tell right away that Sami has direct-to-the-core lyrics that are meant to have a huge impact on the listeners. I also get the sense that Fischer & company are looking to make a huge change in this world directly through their music… Song six, “Blind Believer” really talks to you in an impactful & touching way. To the beat of a killer bass line, Sami on “Blind Believer” had this to say: “This is the bread for the ever hungry. This is water in day of drought. This is feet for the amputees. This is the hope for the blind believer.” Wow… these lyrics really make you think hard for a second as the lead vocalist touches on some important/heartfelt topics. What I loved most about this new record is the simple fact that it is 100% real. The album also exhibits an in-your-face attitude where the Austrian trio see no need to hold back their emotions/feelings. This group lets it all out as they hope to have a big effect on the public. Ich bin ja wirklich ein Freund raffinierter, ausgefummelter Arrangements, komplizierter, vielschichtiger Sounds und versteckter Winzigdetails, die man erst beim dritten Hören entdeckt. Genauso aber ein Fan klarer Ansagen: Gesang, Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug und los! My Glorious gehört eher in diese zweite Kategorie. Morgen erscheint ihr zweites Album Home Is Where The Heart Breaks und für mich ist es jetzt schon eine der Lieblingsentdeckungen der letzten Zeit. Keyboards spielen auf dem Album keine große Rolle; hier und da – ganz sparsam – mal eine Fläche oder ein Sweep und das wars. Dafür jedoch eine Breite an Gitarren- und Bass-Sounds, die jede Nuance der Stimme unterstreicht und jedem der zwölf Songs seine eigene Farbe gibt. Und da sind sie dann doch wieder, die ausgefummelten Arrangements, siehste! Home Is Where The Heart Breaks erinnert daran, dass man Musik doch eigentlich mit der Hand macht. Bei CD-Besprechungen dieser Art zieht man ja gerne Vergleiche zu anderen Bands, so ist im Zusammenhang mit My Glorious öfter mal die Rede von den Foo Fighters oder Coldplay. Mag sein, vielleicht, meine Assoziationen sind andere: Besonders manche Passagen in der zweiten Hälfte des Albums haben mich an Pink Floyd erinnert. Nicht, weil hier jemand versucht, diesen Sound nachzuahmen, sondern weil diese Auffassung von Songwriting, diese Art Musik zu machen heute – in Zeiten des 3:30 min Formatradios – ziemlich selten geworden ist: sich Zeit zu nehmen, um einen Song zu erzählen. Und wenn das knapp sieben Minuten dauert, dann ist das eben so. Während die meisten Songs auf Home Is Where The Heart Breaks ordentlich nach vorne gehen, schlägt Horse (Track 7 des Albums und einer meiner Favoriten) einen anderen Ton an. Wenn ich das Album noch ein paar Mal gehört habe, kann ich laut mitsingen. Spätestens dann, wenn man draußen wieder Sonnenbrillen und T-Shirts trägt, muss ich das alles draufhaben! Auf keinen Fall, auch wenn das Trio aus Österreich gar nicht so sehr nach Garagenrock klingt, wie der Beipackzettel zu suggerieren versucht. Passender ist schon die ebenfalls dort zu findende Verortung zwischen Foo Fighters und Coldplay, wobei eine Erweiterung des Namedroppings um Kings of Leon der Band aus Wien auch ganz gut zu Gesicht stehen würde. Die meisten Stücke auf “Home Is Where The Heart Breaks” sind im Midtempo-Bereich angelegt und bewegen sich mit expressiver Selbstsicherheit zwischen Melancholie, Schwermut und vertonter Trotzigkeit. Der aus dem United Kingdom stammende Sänger und Gitarrist Samuel Fischer hält mit seinem markanten Stimmorgan die Songs in der Balance und figuriert als Dreh- und Angelpunkt des Albumgeschehens. Stücke wie “You Should Be Dancing” haben sich in der Ohrwurm-Marinade schön voll gesaugt, bevor sie von dem Trio gemeinsam kross gebraten werden. Bei dem wunderbaren “Blur Horizon” drängt sich eine Audioslave-Assoziation auf, was hier im Kontext keinesfalls negativ zu deuten ist. “Break My Heart” geht angenehm nach vorne, was man sich auf Albumlänge öfters wünschen würde, denn gerade hier scheinen Bandstärken zu finden zu sein. Ambitionierte, sich an die 7 Minuten Grenze orientierende Stücke wie “Under The Water” tauchen entweder ab oder wagen wie “Use Me” gleich die Arschbombe vom Zehn-Meter-Brett. Letztgenanntes ist in der Tat wirklich remarkable. “Atmosphere” versucht sich ebenfalls recht gelungen am Stimmungsspagat und alles in allem dürfte die Schnittmenge zwischen Alternative-Rock und Pop-Appeal bei einem breit angelegten Publikum gut ankommen. Mein Fall ist das nicht zu 100 Prozent, aber die Qualität des Dargebotenen ist schon beachtlich, so dass für die Band in Zukunft noch was gehen dürften. “You Should Be Dancing” is the first single off of the newest album by My Glorious, and it firmly establishes the act as one that is confident and sure of their abilities. There are hints of Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, and even U2 at the periphery. The driving beat established by the splashy drums allows a proper foundation for the spot-on vocals to truly shine, giving the act the proper energy to continue on with “Home Is Where The Heart Breaks”. While one will be blown away by the their 2008 debut, “Leper”, I feel that all aspects of the band have been further ratcheted up for “Home Is Where The Heart Breaks”. Where My Glorious has only been around for the better part of two years, it honestly sounds as if they have been rocking out over five or ten. The sound crafted by the band and Raphael Spannocchi is one that is able to properly idealize the music of those that influenced My Glorious while not becoming beholden to those act – My Glorious is able to put their unique stamp on everything that is featured here. Make sure to pick up a copy of “Home Is Where The Heart Breaks” when it comes out in specific parts of Europe February 5th, or in April when it finally hits American shores; it will be available at all normal online distribution outlets (CDBaby, Amazon). “The bread for the ever hungry” “Reibeisenstimme mit echtem Wieder-erkennungswert. Der Selbstbeschreibung folgend ist das, was man auf dem in Europa und den USA erscheinenden Full-Length-Debüt “Home Is Where The Heart Breaks” geboten bekommt, “Garage Beat”. Oder, wie es umschrieben auf Myspace zu finden ist: “Foo Fighters meet Coldplay at Liam Gallagher’s house.” Haha, sehr gut. Doch Schluss jetzt mit den Späßen, denn diese Scheibe verbietet eigentlich jegliche dummdreiste Kommentiererei. Beim Start ins Album mit “Love Extenders” geben sich My Glorious dann auch gar nicht erst falsche Mühe, einen breitenkompatiblen Ersteindruck zu vermitteln: Gesanglich ist das Stück unrund im positiven Sinne und strahlt einen ziemlich spröden Charme aus. Der große Kontrapunkt wird dann mit dem zum Popo-Wackeln animierenden “You Should Be Dancing” gesetzt; das haben Mando Diao 2009, wenn gleich deutlich pop-affiner, auch nicht viel besser hingekriegt. Bei “Blow Up The Sun” beschleicht mich direkt ein so ernsthaftes (darf ich hier “deepes” schreiben!?) Gefühl, wie ich es sonst bei den aktuellen Sachen von Thrice oder auch Brand New verspüre. Wie nach knapp 40 Sekunden das Schlagzeug in “Use Me” so grandios sperrig reindonnert, dass es im Hirnkasterl fast schon wieder weh tut! Wenn selbst langsamere, kompositorisch im Grunde völlig unspektakuläre Songs ohne wirkliche Steigerung wie “It’s Love When” zu fesseln wissen, dann machen da welche einfach was verdammt richtig. Das “Tüpfelchen auf dem i” stellen die oftmals vorhandenen Verbindungen zwischen den Songs dar, die einen tollen Flow entstehen lassen. “Home Is Where The Heart Breaks” wirkt trotz aller Facetten als echte Einheit. Gibt’s auch Negatives anzumerken? Für den großen Durchbruch fehlt den Herren wohl noch der ein oder andere Überhit. Die Produktion könnte aller schrammeligen Ausrichtung zum Trotz etwas dicker sein. Mit “Under The Water” und “Horse” sind auch zwei weniger tolle Nummern am Start. All das kann aber nicht verhindern, dass man mit “Home Is Where The Heart Breaks” eine wunderschöne, intensive und gleichsam völlig relaxte knappe Stunde verbringen kann. Und ich möchte nicht ausschließen, dass sich diese Scheibe noch einmal als echter Grower vor dem Herrn entpuppen könnte. Nach der absolvierten US-Tour sollte man My Glorious definitiv live abpassen, so denn möglich. Es gibt etwas Neues aus unserem sympathischen südlichen Nachbarland. MY GLORIOUS, ein Trio aus dem schönen Wien, haben sich seit Januar 2008 ganz und gar dem groovigen Rock mit ernsthaften, nachdenklichen Texten verschrieben und wagen sich nun mit ihrem Debutalbum HOME IS WHERE THE HEART BREAKS aus der Deckung. Die beiden Zwillinge Paul und Gregor an Bass und Schlagzeug und der Brite Sami an Gitarre und Mikrophon, alles ehemalige Mitglieder der auch breiteren Kreisen bekannte Rockband ‘Fresh’, zelebrieren ihre Liebe zum Rock mit sehr viel Herz und Gefühl. Herausgekommen ist ein frisches, bodenständiges, gitarrenlastiges Album, dass sich wohltuend von dem im Moment modernen „Wir spielen die Songs der ROLLING STONES“ nach a la THE HIVES oder THE STROKES abhebt. Für das Erstlingswerk spricht auch, dass man auf Anhieb nicht sagen kann, wem die Musik ähnelt. Die drei Jungs haben also etwas genuin Eigenes geschaffen: raue, rotzige Partien wechseln sich mit melodischen, melancholischen Passagen, die wiederum auf Old-School- und Schrammelrock treffen. They have just returned from a three week tour of the USA and have been making friends and fans out of artists such as former members of ‘Audio Adrenaline’ and gospel singer ‘Nathan Wesley Smith’. Back in Austria ‘My Glorious’ are introducing themselves to the world with the release of a 6 track EP called ‘Leper’. Hearing the EP for the first time was quite a shock.’Fresh’s’ album had been well polished, well produced and smooth. ‘Leper’ sounds like the band have stuck a mic in the middle of a garage and gone for, and I love it. It’s raw and passionate. Bass and drums thump away on every track giving Sami a solid floor on which to place his rattled guitar tracks and bellow out his vocals. Sami isn’t a natural singer, but it makes it all the better as far as I am concerned as it adds to the rawness and the genuine feeling of the songs. ‘All I ever do’ is a great example of this as the combination of the Spartan guitars, the thudding bass and the thwack of a single snare drum gives the impression of pain. I had a real sense of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Philadelphia’ through the opening verse. ‘Fire’ has Sami sounding a little like ‘Lou Reed’ and opening track ‘Give me time’ has a crashing guitar, which adds to the scaled down innocence of the song. This is very much an EP that needs to be played loud to get the full impact of what they are about. Quietly on the speakers of your computer just does not do them justice. So loud on your car stereo that it makes your back wheels jump off of the road, that’s how they should and will be appreciated. With the touch-of-grit and wide range of guitar stylings from vocalist Samuel Fischer leading the way on the Telecaster, bassist Gregor Sailer laid down beautiful foundations with his Music Man Stingray five-stringer, while twin brother Paul tossed his dreadlocks and hit top dead center with rhythm on drums delving deep into a crisp style salted liberally with syncopations around steady downbeats.
